If you are on this page, maybe you are searching to find an answer how to start andstock your bar.
The first question is: how do I stock my bar – what do I start with? If you look through bar books you can find a complete list of a bar – what goes in full bar. I wouldn’t do that. I have lots of different spirits because I like to experiment with spirits, search for every possible combination in cocktails and I’m not a person you want to follow πŸ˜‰ You can buy a whole bar, lots of different spirits and probably you’ll be disappointed (read – broke). Most of people want to start with buying 2-3 bottles and they are wondering what to buy.
DON’T go and buy random stuff. DON’T go and buy Gin, Vodka and Tequila (for example). Base your cocktails on what YOU like. Find a recipe you like and buy those ingredients. Go to a friend’s house, go to a bar and order a cocktail. If you don’t know what’s in it, ask. Just to figure out what you like most.
Most cocktails are based on these hard spirits – Tequila, Whisky, Rum, Gin and Vodka. If you have never drunk cocktails and you want to start, base your cocktails on the spirits you like.
For example, if you prefer Tequila – Margarita is easy and perfect drink. All you need is Tequila, some orange liqueur (Triple Sec, Cointreau, Grand Marnier etc.) and lime…..
After you decide what you want to make, perfect it, become a master of that drink. You only need 2 spirits. You don’t have to buy the most expensive liqueur (Grand Marnier) – try with Triple Sec, it’s about 15 EUR/USD. Maybe it’s not good as Grand Marnier but that doesn’t matter. When you know how to make a perfect Margarita, you can buy lemon rum so you can make Pink Kitty for example (with cranberry juice). With Lemon rum, orange juice and cranberry juice you can make Lemon Madras. And now you can make 3 completely different cocktails with basically three main ingredients.
With time you can slowly add other spirits to expand number of cocktails you want to make. In a years’ time you’ll have a small home bar and your friends will come over because they know you’ll make a great cocktail – you’ll make them so well. You can make your own little book with cocktails which you can give to your guests when they come over if you want.
So to sum it up…..DON’T listen to other people and immediately buy every bottle you can get. Start slowly and perfect that cocktail. Slowly build your bar. It’s better to know how to make a perfect cocktail then to have tons of bottles and don’t know what to do with them (and in the meantime you’ll be broke)….GOOD LUCK πŸ™‚
